CalSWEC Data Sets

Retention Study (1996-Ongoing)

Collection of this data is ongoing and is not available for use by outside researchers at the present time.

Description
The dependent variable for this study is whether the Title IV-E graduate (who is surveyed and interviewed 6 months to 1 year after s/he completes his or her work obligation in the public child welfare agency) intends to stay or leave the public child welfare field/agency.

As of November 2005, 727 responses to the mailed survey had been collected, and 392 of those respondents agreed to a telephone interview. For all years of graduation and all participating schools, the survey response rate is just over 50 percent, with the rate decreasing in recent years.

The comparison of the respondents to the population of CalSWEC Title IV-E graduates who have completed their work obligation has yielded no statistical differences for response rates between the population and the sample by year of graduation. However, there is a trend (X2= 15.885, d.f. = 9, p = .069) toward respondents being more likely to be among the “stayers”. There were differential response rates between different schools attended (X2= 53.774, d.f. = 13, p = .000).
