A quarterly newsletter produced for the constituents of the California Social Work Education Center, the nation's largest state coalition of social work educators and practitioners.

Revision of Curriculum Competencies for Public Child Welfare
The competencies, typically revised every five years, were last updated in 2002. Following an inclusive statewide review process, the most recent draft of the competencies will receive a final review by the CalSWEC Board Curriculum Committee on September 28, 2007. After Board approval, the reformulated competencies will be printed and distributed.

Long-Term Look at Title IV-E Graduates
Starting in 2007-08, a new, long-term study of IV-E graduates and their employment will begin. This study, which is planned to yield knowledge and insight into IV-E MSW graduate career trajectories, marks an extension of previous evaluation ending with completion of the IV-E program.

After finishing their employment obligations, all IV-E MSW graduates will be asked to complete a brief on-line survey every two years, through a total of eight years of post-graduate work experience. The survey is voluntary and the information given will be held in confidence. CalSWEC researchers hope all grads will be willing to participate. The information gathered will be very valuable in constructing a more accurate picture of what role IV-E participation may play in the careers of graduates, as well as in providing graduate feedback to strengthen the program itself.

Social Worker Loan Forgiveness Legislation
Both the U.S. Senate (The Higher Education Access Act of 2007--S.1762) and House of Representatives (College Cost Reduction Act of 2007--H.R. 2669) have passed higher education student loan measures that include language on loan forgiveness for public child welfare social workers. Both bills provide forgiveness for public service staff after 10 years of work. The House version is supported by several organizations, including the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), because it includes loan forgiveness of $1,000 a year for up to five years if the individual works in one of eight areas of national need, including public and private child welfare social work. Congressional staff are working to integrate the two versions. For further information and opportunities for advocacy, see the websites of CWLA and NASW.

2008 Student Day
The Title IV-E Student Day conference will be held on March 28, 2008, at the Mission Inn, Riverside, California. Lisa Fimbres, an MSW student at CSU San Bernardino, will coordinate the event.
