TRAINING EVALUATION

CalSWEC Staff Are Guest Editors
CalSWEC Director Chris Mathias and Child Welfare In-Service Training Project Director Barrett Johnson were guest editors for a special issue of the Journal of the National Staff Development and Training Association (NSDTA) on training evaluation. The issue, Training and Development in Human Services, vol. 4, no. 1 (2007), presents a selection of past Proceedings of the National Human Services Training Symposium hosted by CalSWEC and co-sponsored by the NSDTA annually since 1998. The volume was distributed at NSDTA's national conference in October.

IN-SERVICE TRAINING

New Training Resource
Newly posted on the Regional Training Academy Coordination/Other Training Resources pages of the CalSWEC website, http://calswec.berkeley.edu/CalSWEC/OtherTraining.html, is a Training Resource on Legal Residency for Juveniles within the Child Welfare System: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status & the Violence against Women Act. This resource is designed to inform child welfare staff regarding the Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the applicability of these laws to undocumented immigrant youth who are in the child welfare system due to abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment.

Tracking Standardized Core Training
With the advent of new regulations for initial and ongoing training for child welfare staff across the state, counties are establishing and refining their methods of tracking completion of training by their staff. Members of the Statewide Training and Education Committee (STEC) and county leaders will meet on February 20, 2008 at the Doubletree Hotel Sacramento to analyze tracking issues and to devise effective strategies.

AGING INITIATIVE

New Chair
Margaret Tynan, chair of the Social Work Department at CSU, Stanislaus, stepped down as chair of the Aging Initiative after four years of service. Anita Harbert, director of San Diego State University's School of Social Welfare, accepted the position of Chair at the September 2007 meeting.

University Survey Final Report
In January 2008, the initiative plans to post the final report for the University Survey of schools of social work on the CalSWEC website. The current status of social work education in aging will be presented along with baseline data to assess the level of competency-based aging curriculum among the school programs. The report includes comparative data on aging programs nationwide.

Labor Force Survey
Data collection has begun on a statewide labor force survey of current and projected service needs for older adults. Surveys have been sent to county programs and subcontractors. Surveys will also go out to select Adult Day Health Centers. Currently, energies are focused on data collection and strategies to increase response rate.
