CalSWEC Curriculum Competencies for Public Child Welfare

The CalSWEC Curriculum Competencies for Public Child Welfare are created for use by the graduate schools of social work to prepare their child welfare students. These competencies reflect the common priorities of schools and agencies, yet allow each institution suitable autonomy. The California Child Welfare Competencies, as they are also known, serve as a model for collaborative curriculum development across the nation.

The curriculum competencies are revised every four or five years to reflect current practice. In 2008, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the social work accrediting body, adopted revised core competencies for use in all accredited programs. As a result, CalSWEC began a major revision of its competency framework to maintain consistency with CSWE requirements while incorporating guidelines for good practice in the child welfare context.

The most recent Public Child Welfare competencies revision, incorporating integrated foundation and advanced competencies, was approved by CalSWEC's Board of Directors in 2011.
