Title Assessment, Intervention, and Recovery Support for Substance Abusing Parents in the Child Welfare System

Summary: This project is applying the Motivational Interviewing techniques to help child welfare workers identify and help substance abuse among the parents of children in the child welfare system. Additionally, it will information on different models of substance abuse treatment and what kinds of clients do best in each. Finally it will address issues of recovery and the related issues of time and relapse.

Products: This project proposes to create a teaching manual, that is divided into separate teaching modules covering the following areas:

1. Assessment/Intervention. Using the 'Motivational Interviewing' model.
2. Treatment. The philosophy, rationale, and methods of treatment, what kinds of clients do best in what types of treatment.
3. Recovery. Focusing on the recovery process, particularly in women, as well as on signs of relapse and relapse prevention.

Overheads and a full bibliography including reading and video sources is included. A disk containing the overheads for a PowerPoint(tm) is also available.
