Title Asian American Children and Families in Foster Care Systems: Factors Leading to Different Types of Out-of-Home Placement, Adjustments of Children to Foster Care, and Experiences of Immigrant Asian Families in the U.S. Public Child Welfare System Principal Investigator(s): Siyon Rhee and Janet Chang School: CSU, Los Angeles Project Goal: To identify policy, practice, and service delivery implications for the use of out-of-home care for Asian American children and to evaluate service needs, cross-cultural experience, and barriers faced by immigrant Asian parents in Los Angeles. This curriculum focuses on child maltreatment issues and effective practice strategies among immigrant Asian families. Specifically, it elucidates demographic and behavioral characteristics of child abuse victims and perpetrators in four major immigrant Asian communities (Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese), factors contributing to the selection of two types of placement (in-home and out-of-home) by child protective services workers, and effective child welfare practice with immigrant Asian families.
