Briefing on Transitions within State's Mental Health Services
Patricia Ryan, executive director of the California Mental Health Directors Association (CMHDA), presented an update on the many transitions occurring within California’s system of mental health services. She discussed the elimination of the state Department of Mental Health, Program Realignment, Alcohol and Other Drugs merger, the Mental Health Services Act, and related impacts to the many organizations within the system.

Ms. Ryan also shared ideas and recommendations from CMHDA on how CalSWEC could make an impact in helping to address growing workforce development needs within this changing environment.

Update Presented by Field Instruction Initiative Pilot Schools
An update of CalSWEC’s Field Instruction Initiative was presented to the CalSWEC Board of Directors by the pilot project schools: California State University, Chico; California State University, Dominguez Hills; San Jose State University; and the University of Southern California.

Each school has developed an instruction models that may better meet university and field requirements. The schools and their models are the following:

Board members expressed their excitement about the transferability of the models and asked the presenters numerous questions.

CalSWEC Board Secretary/Treasurer Allan Rawland Retires
The CalSWEC Board of Directors bid farewell to long-time board member Allan Rawland, who announced his retirement as director of the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health. In his most recent positions as the board’s secretary/treasurer and co-chair of the Mental Health Committee, Mr. Rawland has provided leadership for both CalSWEC’s Mental Health Initiative as well as for overall CalSWEC development.

Board President Marv Southard presented Mr. Rawland with a Certificate of Appreciation at the February Board meeting, thanking him for his significant contributions to the CalSWEC mission and organization.
