August 8, 2017

Michael Sumner is the newest member of CalSWEC’s Research and Evaluation team, announced its Director, Dr. Sandhya Rao Hermon.

Dr. Sumner joins CalSWEC, effective August 14, as a program evaluation and research specialist. He will be responsible for supporting CalSWEC’s Title IV-E, Regional Training Academy, and Integrated Behavioral Health programs.

“We are very excited that Mike is joining us, particularly because of his understanding of county life,” said Dr. Rao Hermon.

He joins the R&E team of Program Evaluation & Research Specialist Dr. Michael Biehl, Training & Evaluation Specialist Tenia Davis, and Research & Evaluation Analyst Elizabeth Wroughton.

Long Career as Social Justice Researcher

Dr. Sumner has been a social justice researcher for over 20 years. The core of his work, using the intersectional lenses of race, gender, and poverty, has centered around education, workforce development, and economic empowerment.

Most recently, he was a research and policy analyst at the Contra Costa County Employment and Human Services Department, helping to monitor and improve child welfare services, along with additional workforce development and public benefit programs.

Previously, he was employed at MWM Consulting Group, the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at UC Berkeley School of Law, and the Discrimination Research Center.
