LGBTQ Guidelines

The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) currently has copies available of their publication titled Best Practice Guidelines: Serving LGBT Youth in Out of Home Care. LGBT children and youth do not have unique needs. They do, however, have distinct experiences and stressors generated by society's misunderstanding and biases. Public and private child welfare practitioners need to increase their understanding and tailor their services and supports in ways that respect these individual experiences.

The guidelines include information on existing non-discrimination laws, supporting positive development, understanding unique health and educational needs, managing confidential information, and creating safe, respectful, and nurturing home and social environments.

  • For an electronic copy of the guidelines available through the National Center for Lesbian Rights click here.
  • To order hard copies of the Best Practice Guidelines, which are $14.95 per booklet, go to: http://www.cwla.org/pubs/pubdetails.asp?PUBID=0951.
