Videos like these are among the California Just in Time (JIT) training library's expanding collection. The JIT training is part of the state’s Quality Parenting Initiative (QPI), an approach to strengthening foster care by refocusing on excellent parenting for all children in the child welfare system.

QPI began in 2009 as a collaborative effort with California Department of Social Services and the County Welfare Directors Association (CWDA) of California to strengthen statewide efforts for the recruitment and retention of quality caregivers who support the health development of and achievement of permanency for children who cannot live with their parents.

The Just in Time training is provided for foster parents and other caregivers.

Trainings are selected in a variety of ways, explains CalSWEC Training and Curriculum Specialist Shay O’Brien. For example, she says, by what caregivers request, what the team at Youth Law Center requests that CalSWEC’s QPI team record, what the community colleges are offering, and what is happening at various related conferences and convenings.

Recordings of trainings are made by the QPI team of Ms. O’Brien, Distance Education Specialist Mauricio Wright, and Training and Evaluation Analyst Esmira Ramirez.
