Changes to Board Structure, Meetings Herald Major Step in Strategic Plan's Implementation

Dear CalSWEC Community,

It is with great pleasure that I report that the CalSWEC Board of Directors has taken a major step in implementing the organization’s Strategic Plan approved in May 2016.

The Board last month overwhelmingly approved to accept the proposed change in Board membership and meetings that will help CalSWEC transform into a more responsive and self-sustaining organization and support its mission to facilitate and support the education and training of social workers in the field of child welfare, integrated behavioral health, and aging.

The specific Board actions taken to be nimble, responsive, and Mission oriented include:

  • Shifted decision-making focus to the CalSWEC stakeholder community by establishing a multi-day annual stakeholder conference that is supplemented with virtual-based topic and task-specific work groups throughout the year.
  • A board structure that is advisory in nature and composed of 25 members representing California schools of social work, county welfare and behavioral health organizations, education and training partners, Tribal partners, advocates, and mission-related organizations.
  • The establishment of three permanent committees operationalizing the Strategic Plan that address capacity-building and planning, evaluation and research, and advocacy and policy issues related to the CalSWEC mission.

Next steps include the revision of the CalSWEC By-laws and fully seat the Advisory Board in spring 2018.

Scott Gruendl
