Three CalSWEC staff have been promoted to directorships, rounding out the organization’s Executive Team as the new year begins.

They are Ms. Tenia Davis, Director of the Child Welfare In-Service Training Program; Ms. Mavis Njoo-Lau, Director of Finance; and Dr. Michael Sumner, Director of Evaluation and Research.

“Each of our newly promoted leaders has a sound foundational knowledge about CalSWEC's program operations, as well as deep content expertise,” said Executive Director Virginia Rondero Hernandez in announcing the promotions. “I am confident that Mavis, Mike, and Tenia will excel in their new positions and help to lead CalSWEC's Mission forward.”

The three directors join the others on CalSWEC’s Executive Team, Director of Technology and Instructional Design Christopher Cajski, Director of Integrated Behavioral Health Dr. E. Maxwell Davis, and Director of the Title IV-E Stipend Program Carolyn Shin.

Ms. Davis, who joined CalSWEC in 2013, served as Interim Director of the Child Welfare In-Service Training Program since June 2018 and was appointed Director in November 2018. In her new role, she will lead the program that focuses on the development of the public social services workforce by facilitating collaboration between the regional training academies and by providing technical assistance to improve training outcomes for public child welfare professionals. Ms. Davis earned an M.S.W. at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice.

Ms. Njoo-Lau joined CalSWEC in 2011 as a research administrator, a position she held until she was promoted to Fiscal Lead in July 2018. She was named Director of Finance in October 2018. She oversees the Fiscal Team and manages all aspects of pre-award administration, including proposal review, submission, and award setup. She also monitors and maintains over $100 million post-award grant management activities in accordance with campus policies and agency requirements, including overseeing all financial operations and financial planning and structure. Ms. Njoo-Lau earned an M.A. in community health education at the University of Northern Iowa.

Dr. Sumner joined CalSWEC in August 2017 as a program evaluation and research specialist. He served as the Interim Lead of Evaluation and Research for the Title IV-E Stipend Program from March 2018 until his promotion to Director of Evaluation and Research in October 2018. Dr. Sumner oversees CalSWEC’s evaluation and research activities. Working with stakeholders, he develops a unified vision for these activities, ensures project completion, secures new funding for novel projects, and oversees the Evaluation and Research Team. Dr. Sumner’s doctorate in psychology is from New York University.
