Programs & Initiatives

The impetus for CalSWEC’s creation was to increase the numbers and improve the preparation of social workers to work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families in the public sector. As the need for professional social work staff in other settings has grown, CalSWEC has broadened its scope. Today, it assists both current and future social workers by providing professional education, student support, in-service training, and workforce evaluation research in the fields of (1) child welfare, including foster youth, (2) mental health, and (3) aging.

Child Welfare

CalSWEC’s Child Welfare Program supports future social workers through the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program and current social workers through training and education offered by the In-Service Training Coordination Project.

Mental Health

The Mental Health Program (MHP) provides funding for stipends for MSW students at California schools of social work planning careers in the mental health system, and supports related academic and administrative activities.

Aging

The Aging Initiative consists of a statewide coalition of key stakeholders representing the academic community and providers from the public and private sectors. Its purpose is to develop a statewide plan with specific strategies to address the need for building the training and education capacity, creating incentives for attracting students, and improving the diversity of the workforce.
