CalSWEC has published a comprehensive retrospective study on the MHSA MSW Stipend Program and its impact on workforce development in California

April 5, 2022

Led by Integrated Behavioral Health Program Director E. Maxwell Davis, Ph.D., CalSWEC's IBH program has completed a comprehensive retrospective study of the Mental Health Services Act MSW Stipend Program that CalSWEC directed from 2005-06 through 2018-19. After completing extensive follow-up with MHSA Stipend Program graduates from all training years and all participating universities, study data was juxtaposed against program data in order to assess the program's impact on identified workforce development goals and to identify factors that may influence the employment and retention of MHSA graduates in California's behavioral health system. CalSWEC has published a white paper that summarizes these findings as well as recommendations for how California's MSW programs and public behavioral health agencies can work together to enhance future training efforts and the retention of MSWs in public behavioral health service settings.
