CalSWEC has hired Ore Carmi for the position of administrative assistant, effective February 14. He will provide support for both the Administrative and Evaluation and Research teams.
The announcement came from Administrative Director Nancy Nelson, who said, “We are pleased to have Mr. Carmi join CalSWEC, where his skills will be put to good use supporting the growing needs of our initiative projects.”
For the Evaluation and Research team, Mr. Carmi will be responsible for cleaning and organizing data of the Regional Training Academy Project's Common Core 3.0. The majority of his time will be spent doing a variety of administrative tasks serving CalSWEC’s Title IV-E Stipend Program and Integrated Behavioral Health Program.
Mr. Carmi has about 15 years’ experience in administrative work, including 10 years at UC Berkeley, providing support for the microbiology lab of the late Professor Sydney Kustu in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology.
He has a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School with a concentration in piano. He also has an M.S. in Biology from San Francisco State University, where he studied avian phylogenetics. His paper on the phylogeography of Vermilion Flycatchers was published this past year.
Following graduation from San Francisco State in 2013, Mr. Carmi worked for two years as a guide in the Naturalist Center at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, where he engaged with museum visitors in informal science education. This past summer, he was Field Assistant for the Southern Sierra Research Station in eastern Kern County, helping with Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Willow Flycatcher conservation projects.
While working half-time at CalSWEC, Mr. Carmi will also continue part-time as a pianist for Kairos Youth Choir in Berkeley.
