The San Francisco Bay Area Integrated Behavioral Health MSW Stipend Program is a regional stipend and training program available to second year MSW students at UC Berkeley, California State University East Bay, San Francisco State University, and San Jose State University. The program’s central goal is to build regional capacity and infrastructure for the greater integration of behavioral health care and primary care services in communities in need.
Funded through the Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) initiative of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) since 2017, IBH MSW Stipend Program utilizes a multi-level approach to training, resource development, and capacity building intended to support a sustainable plan to better integrate behavioral health care and primary care services across the Bay Area.
Trainees are awarded $10,000 stipends and provided with specialized training that prepares them to effectively provide behavioral health care services in integrated care settings. In exchange they commit to seeking employment in such settings and participating in program evaluation activities after graduation. The program also develops and disseminates IBH training resources for MSW program faculty and MSW field training site supervisors and agency staff.
Specific program activities and goals include:
Providing stipend support, specialized coursework and field training focused on the implementation of the IBH model, and unique inter-professional training opportunities to MSW trainees
Providing inter-professional training opportunities to MSW instructional faculty, field faculty, site-based field supervisors, and other collaborators affiliated with the training program
Strengthening and expanding the implementation of the IBH model and enhancing the inter-professional nature of training provided to students at existing MSW IBH field training sites
Developing new MSW IBH field training sites, targeting agencies and units impacted by the increased Medi-Cal enrollments associated with California’s Medicaid expansion
